Chevrolet Silverado Engine Options for Hartford Connecticut Truck Shoppers
“A major focus of the next-generation Silverado is expanding the range of choices,” said Tim Asoklis, chief engineer for the Silverado 1500. “With all-new engines and a broader model range, there’s a Silverado for everyone, whether you’re buying your first pickup or your tenth.”
The 2020 rendition of the iconic Silverado 1500 is nothing short of amazing, and the range of options is so extensive it’s close to impossible not to find one that’s precisely built to meet your individual needs.
Chevrolet has kept all the good bits that made the Silverado the second most sold vehicle in the US, improved where the pickup was lacking, and added new features to cement its place as probably the best pickup truck available today on the market.
The first commendable thing about the Silverado 1500 is its commanding exterior look. Built for those with true grit in their veins, the Silverado seems to offer no apology for the might it knows it’s capable of. Modern, sharp lines cut a herculean shape into cold steel to create one of the most impressive truck designs we’ve ever seen. Elegant and in control, that’s what the Silverado screams the moment you lay eyes on it.
As far as options go, just think there are eight trim levels available and six engine choices. From V8s to the best in class fuel-efficient diesel in the pickup world, there’s something for everyone.
The standard engine for the Silverado 1500 is the 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 capable of putting out a respectable 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque. Entry-level designed for fleet purchases or for those in need of a truck now and again.
A more capable option comes in the form of a surprisingly powerful 4-cylinder. Considered blasphemy just a few years ago, a 4-cylinder engine on a pickup truck is welcomed with open arms by today's consumers. That's because it can deliver quite some power while still offering crossover-comparable mileage per gallon. I'd like to see any pickup truck of old produce 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque while being able to go 20 miles per gallon with all-wheel drive. Silverado’s 2.7-liter turbo-4 can do just that, and many people are impressed.
Before we get to the mighty V8s, Chevrolet introduced a brand-new, industry-leading diesel engine for 2020. It’s the 3.0-liter turbodiesel-6 that will create 277 horsepower and, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, will churn out a whopping 460 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm.
Its numbers get even more impressive when you look at fuel economy. Pulverizing the competition for the top spot as the most fuel-efficient diesel engine fitted on any pickup truck, it gets an impressive 25 miles per gallon combined in four-wheel drive and an unbelievable 32 miles per gallon with rear-drive. Those are numbers even a crossover SUV would be proud to match.
Now, the main event. For those in search of serious power, there’s no better choice than one of the two available V8s. The smaller one, if you can call it that, is GM’s 5.3-liter that can be equipped with a 6-, 8-, or 10-speed automatic. All are able to produce 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. The 6-speed is equipped with the Active Fuel Management system that can shut down four cylinders under light load conditions, while the 8-speed and 10-speed can shut down one to six cylinders.
King among Silverado 1500 powertrains is the 6.2-liter V-8 that churns out 420 horses and 460 lb-ft. Coupled with a 10-speed automatic, it can tow upwards of 13.400 pounds — serious numbers for serious needs.
