If you’re in the market for a sub-compact city car, a great choice is the Chevrolet Spark and here’s why. First off, the Spark has that winning low price-great features ratio. The price for the base model is excellent, well below most of the competition and certainly lower than the most noteworthy competitor models.

The car has a 98 horsepower engine that proves to be remarkably nimble on city drives without guzzling fuel for it. With an average of 30 miles per gallon inside the city and 39 miles per gallon on the highway, it definitely qualifies as an economical ride. 

The inside of the car had a modern look and feel due to its contemporary styling, the use of upscale materials here and there, but mostly due to the excellent 7-inch infotainment system, a feature way above the car's price range. With built-in features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay to link your devices and a wifi hotspot, all available on the standard model, the Chevrolet Spark leaves its competitors trailing for comparably priced models. The touchscreen is also above average in quality, as it is able to recognize advanced movements like swiping and pinching, features you would expect from high priced models, not an entry base sub-compact car.

The Chevrolet Sonic - Big Features in a Small Package

A step up the ladder from the Spark, both in price and quality, is the Chevrolet Sonic. Still classified as a sub-compact vehicle, it makes for a more compelling car for the price addition. The three main segments where the Sonic shines are handling, interior comfort and room plus the infotainment system all Chevy cars come equipped with. Let’s take them one by one.

A major plus of the Chevrolet Sonic is that it drives great both inside the city limits as well as on the open road, a feat not accomplished by many cars in its class. You get a standard powerful 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine that does a great job with the price of a below average mileage per gallon, but if you upgrade to either the Sonic LT trim level or the Premier, the base engine will be replaced by an excellent 1.4 liter turbocharged one that gets you 28 miles per gallon in the city and 37 on the highway. Not only that but it’s a perfect match for the car, providing a nimble urban ride and a smooth drive on long trips. For a sporty feel we recommend the Premier trim level and for a smooth ride the LT. The Infotainment system is as good as the Spark's, with the 7-inch touchscreen as standard as well as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and a powerful wifi hotspot. For the sub-compact class, the Chevrolet Spark is extremely roomy, sitting up to 5 adults and it leaves the competition trailing in terms of trunk space.

The Chevrolet Cruze Has it All!

Moving up the ladder yet again we find the Chevy Cruze. No longer a sub-compact, the car provides ample room to seat 5 adults comfortably and enough trunk space to meet any needs.

You get a sense of the upgrade in the interior where you are greeted by more upscale materials and the same exceptional infotainment system all Chevy cars have by default. The 7-inch display comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a wifi hotspot as standard features so you’ll have smartphone integration during that long commute.

Speaking of which, it’s important to point out the most outrageous detail about the Chevrolet Cruze, its fuel economy figures. If the “inside the city limits” mileage per gallon is average, in between 27 and 31 MPG depending on the engine you choose, the stats on the highway go crazy, reaching an unbelievable 52 miles per gallon! Yeah, you read that right… we had to do a double take ourselves, but after we confirmed with Chevrolet and tested to see for ourselves, the figure stands. 52 miles per gallon on the highway (diesel engine), making this car an absolute must for any commuter. When you draw the line, the Chevrolet Cruze is a great car that makes for a deal to goo to pass up on account of its fuel economy. It would have to be no less than a Porsche, at the same price as the Cruze, for one to consider the alternative.
